"Mayfield Victorious at Blue Horizon!"

Heavyweight Eddie Chambers' fight fell out because of Eddie's bronchitas Friday night at the Legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but former world champion Imamu Mayfield and cruiserweight Emanuel Nwodo made up for it.

The event was the annual Blue Horizon Children's Holiday Show and many people brought gifts for the children in need who through their agencies, were invited to attend the event. Promoter Vernocha Michaels could be seen throughout handing out small gifts to the many children throughout the cozy venue. The Matchmaker for the card was the legendary Don Elbaum.

Eight years ago, on November 8, 1997, Imamu Mayfield came out of nowhere and won the IBF cruiserweight championship with a unanimous decision over Uriah Grant in Las Vegas. He made one successful defense before losing the title less than a year later to Arthur Williams. His career has been a spotty 8-5-2 since then, but last night he showed an appreciative Blue Horizon crowd that he can still control a fight with his world-class jab.

Mayfield, of Freehold, NJ, weighed in at a rock solid 202 pounds as he took on a former victim in Rayco Saunders, 191, of Pittsburgh, PA, in the eight round co feature. Saunders was the aggressor, as he opened the fight trying to land bombs like the ones Emanuel Nwodo landed to stop Mayfield in his last bout. Although all three judges gave Mayfield all eight rounds, a case could be made for Saunders winning the opening round, as Mayfield opened cautiously behind a pecking jab. Saunders landed a nice overhand right and a left uppercut in the round.

Mayfield established his jab early and often in round two, as Saunders stood right in front of him behind a high guard. Mayfield would spear his jab between Saunders' gloves time and time again, and had him bleeding from the mouth by the third round. On it went, round after round, with Rayco chasing Mayfield, only to be met with a well placed jab. Some would call the fight boring, but the knowledgeable Philly crowd appreciated the skills of a fighter who once reached the pinnacle of his profession.

Mayfield (25-6-2, 18 KOs) tired a bit in the seventh round, but Saunders (15-7-1, 7 KOs) could only muster single shots, as Mayfield tied him up when he got too close. Mayfield finished strong though, opening the final round with four hard rights to Rayco's body, before going back to his jab, which was still firing on all cylinders. In the end, three identical 80-72 scores were registered in favor of Imamu Mayfield.
